Industry Facts

In a national study of pet ownership, Animal Medicines Australia (AMA) found that dogs continue to be Australia's most popular pet, with just over 5 million dogs accross the nation. Self-reported expenditure on pet-related products and services in Australia is now estimated at more than $13 billion a year. The average dog-owning household spends an estimated $2,158 a year on their dogs, including $586 on food and $470 on veterinary services.

The ABS Labour Force Survey 2020 shows a very strong growth in animal attendant and training occupations over the past 5 years, likely to reach 21,000 by 2025.  Full time workers on an adult wage earn around $986 per week, with higher earnings expected as experience grows.  They report 51% of workers are part time, demonstrating the flexibility that a career in this industry can offer.

Animal attendant and training occupations encompass a variety of different tasks.  From teaching animals to obey verbal and non-verbal commands to addressing behaviourial problems.  Other tasks may include feeding, exercising and playing with animals, answering visitor questions in an animal shelter environment or treating minor injuries.  Roles may include, dog handlers and trainers, horse trainers, zookeepers and kennel hands.
