What You'll Learn

Transform your passion for dogs into a professional career with this comprehensive online Dog Grooming Diploma bundle. Designed by industry professionals and accredited by ICOES, this training combines three key areas of study to give you a well-rounded foundation in dog grooming, behaviour, and pet first aid.

This broader learning approach helps you develop not only practical grooming skills, but also a stronger understanding of dog handling, behaviour, and safety — giving you the confidence to work professionally with a wide range of dogs and clients. It is ideal for those looking to start their own dog grooming business or enter the pet care industry with additional knowledge and credibility.

Why study this bundle?

While a dog groomer does not need to be a qualified trainer or behaviourist, understanding how dogs think, behave, and respond is essential when working in real grooming environments. This additional knowledge helps you handle dogs safely, communicate confidently with owners, and build long-term client trust.

By combining grooming, behaviour, and pet first aid, this bundle provides a more complete skill set for those serious about working professionally or building their own grooming business.

Meet Kylie

Student Story
I started with no grooming experience — just a love of dogs and a dream of working with them.

"At first I lacked confidence, but once I started learning and practising on my dogs, Ziggy and Simba, everything began to change.

As my skills grew, so did my belief in what was possible, and I eventually launched Kylie’s Home Dog Grooming. Now I run my own home salon, set my own hours, and do work I truly love."

Julie Bezemer

Sandi Ferguson

Amanda Toohey
Amanda Toohey

Amanda used to go and watch her friend groom dogs which inspired her to study dog grooming. She helped out at her friends salon, shaving dogs pads and trimming nails and managed to secure a job at a local grooming and day care facility. Amanda has since set up her own part time business as well.

Lisa Grant
Lisa Grant

Alyson Bratt
Alyson Bratt
Owner Scrub Woofers Dog Grooming

Brooklyn Turner
Brooklyn Turner

Having always loved dogs, Brooklyn dreamed of a career as a dog groomer. Whilst studying for year 12, she completed her Dog Grooming Diploma and set up a small salon from her parents home.  She has since gone on to specialise in Asian fusion and teddy bear styles having achieved so much at such a young age.

Brigitte Meissner
Brigitte Meissner

Frequently Asked Questions

See How You Learn Dog Grooming Online

Most students complete the course in around 6-8 months when studying part-time.
This is a self-paced online dog grooming course, so you can study at your own speed with no deadlines. Some students finish faster, while others take longer depending on their schedule and prior experience. You’ll have lifetime access to all course materials, allowing you to revisit grooming techniques such as clipping, scissoring, breed-specific styling, and complete assessments when you’re ready.

Yes — the course includes optional practical grooming tasks you complete at your own pace.

These hands-on activities are designed to help you build confidence using real grooming techniques such as clipping, scissoring, bathing, and coat preparation. There is no requirement to complete practical tasks on a work placement, and you do not need to organise any salon training before enrolling. You can practise on your own dog or on friends’ and family dogs whenever it suits you.

The practical work is there to support your learning and help you gain real-world confidence, but you can progress through the course even if your access to dogs is limited.

Most students gain practical experience by grooming their own dogs, helping friends and family, or finding volunteer grooming opportunities in their local area.

Another popular option is advertising for free grooming models through local community groups and social media. This is often one of the best ways to gain experience while also starting to build a client base. Many of our students are surprised by how much interest they receive and quickly become inundated with model requests. In many cases, these model dogs go on to become regular paying clients once students have developed their confidence and skills.

Some students also choose to volunteer with animal shelters or rescue organisations, while others arrange to observe or shadow an experienced dog groomer in their area.

There is no requirement to organise a work placement before enrolling.

There is no requirement to purchase any equipment before enrolling in this course.

The practical tasks are optional and can be completed at your own pace, typically using a basic grooming kit if you choose to practise on your own or friends’ dogs.

We recommend waiting before buying any tools, as the first module covers grooming equipment in detail and helps you understand exactly what is needed before making any investment. At the end of the module, you’ll be able to download a full equipment checklist to guide your setup.

Career Opportunities for Dog Groomers in Australia

The Australian pet industry continues to experience strong growth, creating excellent opportunities for trained dog groomers. With millions of dogs across Australia and increasing demand for professional grooming services, many salons are booked weeks in advance and qualified groomers remain in high demand.

After completing your Dog Grooming course, potential career pathways include:

Professional Dog Groomer

Work in an established grooming salon, pet spa, veterinary clinic, boarding kennel, or pet retail grooming service. Many groomers choose this pathway to gain practical experience, build confidence, and develop a loyal client following.

Typical Salary: $55,000 - $75,000+ per year depending on experience. Experienced groomers and business owners often earn more.

Mobile Dog Groomer

Mobile grooming continues to grow in popularity throughout Australia. Groomers travel directly to clients' homes, providing a convenient service for busy pet owners.

Typical Earnings: $70,000 - $120,000+ per year for established operators.

Home-Based Dog Grooming Business

Many of our graduates choose to establish a home salon. This pathway offers lower overheads, flexible hours, and the opportunity to gradually build a profitable business while working from home.

Potential Earnings: Varies significantly, with many owner-operators earning well above salon employee wages once established.

Dog Grooming Salon Owner

For those seeking complete independence, opening a dedicated grooming salon can provide substantial long-term earning potential. Successful salon owners may eventually employ additional groomers and expand their business.

Potential Earnings: $80,000 - $150,000+ per year depending on business size, location and client demand.

Grooming Assistant or Dog Washer

Many students begin their careers as grooming assistants while developing confidence and practical experience. This role provides valuable exposure to salon operations, handling techniques, bathing, drying, and customer service.

Typical Salary: $50,000 - $60,000+ per year.

Some groomers develop expertise in specific areas such as:

  • Poodle and Doodle styling
  • Hand stripping
  • Show grooming
  • Asian Fusion grooming
  • Behaviour-sensitive grooming
  • Senior dog grooming

Is Dog Grooming a Good Career in Australia?

Dog grooming can be a rewarding career for people who enjoy working with animals and want the flexibility to build their own business. Unlike many professions, dog grooming offers multiple pathways including employment, self-employment, mobile services, and home-based businesses.

Many graduates are attracted to the industry because it provides:

  • Flexible working hours
  • Opportunity to work for yourself
  • Strong demand for grooming services
  • Low startup costs compared with many businesses
  • The ability to work closely with dogs every day
  • Potential to scale into a larger salon operation
  • Start Your Own Dog Grooming Business

One of the most popular outcomes for our graduates is launching their own grooming business. Whether operating from home, running a mobile service, or opening a salon, many students use their grooming skills as the foundation for a long-term business in the pet industry.

Our course includes practical guidance on grooming techniques, equipment, breed styling, client care, health and safety, and professional grooming procedures to help prepare students for real-world work with dogs.
